A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.- Lao Tzu
Spending a few days in Canggu slows ones pace. Canggu is located towards Tanah Lot – a water temple that is an absolute must for any tourist when in Bali. The beach is far more tumultuous than that of Kuta, attracting bronzed surfers that ooze Patrick Swayzes Point Break style.
As for the food in Canggu, the emphasis seems to be on organic , healthy wholesome food to ensure a day spent battling the waves is followed by a nutritional meal.
Along the long stretched road and next to the Kirana Hotel was a hub of Mexican delights, LaCalita.
Starting off with chargrilled corn, this cheeky little entree arrived drenched in cheese, a perfect friend to the sweet juicy kernels underneath. Even J who has never showed any interest in corn lapped it up.
The BBQ chicken with pineapple arrived in a different form than I had imagined. Instead of the large piece of chicken I had expected, morsels of chargrilled tender chicken interplayed with the apple slaw and pineape pieces. Delicious.
The toppling beef burger oozed with charming defiance. Perfectly messy. If served this up in Melbourne, it would have its own cult following.
Bonus: LaCalita ushered us in with promises of two for 1 mojitos from 5-7pm. The mint flavour dominated over the lime notes but finding a sweet minty drink in SE Asia is always a challenge. This mojito hit the spot !
If you happen to find yourself in Canggu, this place is definitely a look in. Whilst by no means cheap , the quality of the food is well worth the extra rupiahs.
